FOUR WEEKS OF ENOXAPARIN PROPHYLAXIS BEST
Laurie Barclay, MD
NEW YORK (MedscapeWire) Mar 28 — In orthopaedic surgery, 4 weeks of prophylaxis with low molecular weight heparin is more effective than 1 week for the prevention of venous thromboembolism. Results of a trial published in the March 28 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine suggest that the same is true following abdominal or pelvic surgery for cancer.
"Enoxaparin prophylaxis for four weeks after surgery for abdominal or pelvic cancer is safe and significantly reduces the incidence of venographically demonstrated thrombosis, as compared with enoxaparin prophylaxis for one week," write David Bergqvist, MD, Ph ...

AVOCADO/SOYBEAN DERIVATIVE DOES NOT HAVE MAJOR EFFECT IN HIP OSTEOARTHRITIS
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 26 - The anti-osteoarthritic effect of avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU) seen in preclinical tests have not been borne out, overall, in a randomized clinical trial. However, ASU did seem to reduce in patients with advanced joint space narrowing.
In a 2-year, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, Dr. Michel Lequesne, of Hopital Leopold Bellan, Paris, and colleagues examined the effect of ASU in a randomized trial involving 163 patients with symptomatic osteoarthritis of the hip and a joint space of at least 1 mm. The subjects were assigned to take one 300-mg capsule of ASU or a placebo capsule ...

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS LINKED TO LOW LEVELS OF ANAEROBIC BACTERIA IN GUT
ATLANTA (Reuters Health) Mar 26 - The population of anaerobic bacteria in the gastrointestinal system of patients with early-onset rheumatoid arthritis (RA) differs significantly from that of people without the disease, Finnish researchers reported here Monday.
Recent attention has been focused on intestinal flora as a potential link to RA, Dr. Paarvo Toivanen, of Turku University, commented in his presentation at the 2002 International Conference on Emerging Infectious Diseases. Dr. Toivanen and his colleagues conducted a study comparing fecal samples from 25 RA patients with 23 controls without RA but with noninflammatory pain.

STOPPING HRT DOES NOT ACCELERATE BONE LOSS IN POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 25 - Postmenopausal women who stop hormone replacement therapy (HRT) do not loose bone at an unusually high rate, researchers report in the Archives of Internal Medicine for March 25. The authors also report that HRT does not appear to promote additional bone mineral density (BMD) after that seen in 3 years of therapy.
Dr. Gail A. Greendale, from the University of California at Los Angeles School of Medicine, and colleagues collected data on 495 women who participated in the 3-year Postmenopausal Estrogen/Progestin Interventions randomized controlled trial (PEPI-RCT). These women underwent additional BMD measur ...
